Mobile Games Account Top Global Apps Worldwide in Jan 2014

Mobile applications managed to hold the momentum in 2014. The report highlights a growth of one per cent in terms of combined revenue from the Apple App Store and Google Play Store in January, 2014 instead of the expected dip.

Games are a clear hit worldwide, followed by mobile messenger apps, social networking apps and mobile security apps.

Free mobile applications that managed to hit the bull’s eye globally in the Apple App Store are YouTube, Flipagram, Facebook, PAC-MAN and Farm House Heroes. The top three applications ( YouTube, Flipagram and Facebook) share the common factors of version updates and features in the Apple App Store in categories such as “New to the App Store?” or “Great Free Apps” among others during January.

PAC-MAN, generally a paid application, made it to the top free apps list due to its recent price change policy. As soon as the application entered the free category, its download volume was almost similar to Facebook, making it number four on the list.

The arcade puzzle, Farm Heroes Saga was launched in Canada and a few other countries, and travelled to United States in January. Globally, around 60 per cent of the new January users downloaded the game on their iPhone.

Google Play, on the other hand, was home to mobile messengers in the top five free applications for January, 2014. Facebook, WhatsApp Messenger, Facebook Messenger, Candy Crush Saga and Clean Master (Cleaner) – Free topped the charts.

Clean Master (Cleaner) – Free was the only new entry in the list this month. The app replaced Skype (which is now on number seven) and was mostly installed in India, Russia and Mexico.

Candy Crush Saga, Angry Birds Go, Despicable Me: Minion Rush, Netflix and Facebook made it to the top five free applications list for Amazon Appstore. However, total downloads in January were comparatively lower than the total downloads in December, 2013 in Amazon Appstore.

Race of the top paid apps
Minecraft – Pocket Edition ruled the roost for top paid apps across Apple App Store, Google Play Store and Amazon Appstore. For Apple users, Cut The Rope 2 followed with almost 45 per cent of the paid download volume coming from the United States. Heads Up! held the third rank, followed by a new game released in December, Survival Games – Mine Mini Game. Plague Inc stood at fifth position. For the Apple App Store, all top five paid apps were games in January and most downloads were generated in the United States and the United Kingdom.

Swiftkey Keyboard, Powermap Full Version Unlocker, Titanium Backup Pro Key and Nova Launcher Prime followed Minecraft – Pocket Edition in the top five paid list for Google Play Store.

For Amazon Appstore, with nearly half the amount of paid downloads, Scibblenaut Remix was at second position. Plant Vs. Zombie (Kindle Tablet Edition), Temple Run Oz and Cut the Rope formed rest of the list.

For the third consecutive year, top grossing apps for Apple App Store remain unchanged. Supercell’s Clash of Clans took the lead, followed by Candy Crush Saga, Hay Day, Puzzle & Dragons and Game of War – Fire Age.

Revenues and downloads across the iDevices’ were especially projected for a dip, as iOS downloads and revenues had witnessed a surge of more than 50 per cent in December, mainly due to Christmas. However, not only there was progress, but also games such as Game of War – Fire Age witnessed a revenue surge in January, 2014.

Google Play Store saw fierce competition. The Clash of Clans and Candy Crush Saga battle continued in January, 2014 with the former emerging as the number one grossing app in the new year. Candy Crush Saga stands at second position, followed by Puzzle & Dragons and Japanese top title LINE Pokopang.

Supercell’s Hay Day held fifth rank. Hay Day was launched in mid-November, and has received maximum revenue from Japan, Germany, the United Kingdom and France.

In the last six months, Apple App store witnessed a revenue surge of 27 per cent, while Google Play Store saw a revenue growth of nearly 44 per cent. Despite the growth, Google Play Store’s market share stood at 38 per cent, as compared to Apple App Store which had 62 per cent market share in January, 2014.
